August 10, 1863 - A Yankee Volunteer

Drawing by Edwin Forbest, August 10th, 1863, Rappahannock Station, Virginia

Edwin Austin Forbes was an American landscape painter and etcher who first gained fame during the Civil War for his detailed and dramatic sketches of military subjects, including battlefield combat scenes.  During the war, he was special artist for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper.

Many of the etchings he drew were later presented by General William Sherman  to the government. They are now preserved in Washington, D.C. because of their historic value.
